Joined by Lyme Disease experts and researchers at the experiment station, Blumenthal announced his plan to improve diagnostic tools, boost education and reporting and increase support and prevention. In 2009, some 30,000 cases were reported nationwide, but researchers know that’s 10-12 percent of cases that actually occur because Lyme disease is frequently undiagnosed.
“Although Lyme disease is on the rise public funding for this lags behind comparable illnesses,” Blumenthal said. “It’s time to take Lyme and tick born diseases off the back burner where it has languished underfunded, misunderstood and laden with political controversy.”
As uncomfortable as I am with politicization of science and medicine, the refusal of IDSA to accept clinical experience and empirical data has really left no other option.
